How do you avoid hiring assholes?


I’ve heard that you have a policy not to hire assholes. So, do you have some sort of asshole test when you hire? How do you know they are not acting in the interview?

intro How do you avoid hiring assholes?Boy, the day they invent the asshole meter, sign us up. Unfortunately we only have gut instinct to go on. And no one is all bad. The biggest jerks can be charming at times. We heard a great quote once, by someone pondering someone’s true nature: “I wasn’t sure if he was an asshole being nice, or a nice person being an asshole”. We’re all shits at times. But no CD really wants to spend most of their day with people they can’t stand, who can poison a department. When you realise you’ve made the horrible mistake of hiring such a person, as a CD, all you can do is point them towards the door, directly or indirectly, as fast as possible.
