Relationships between branches and head offices

In general, how do head offices of agencies like BBDO and Ogilvy treat the local Canadian offices? How do Canadian offices treat and perceive the head offices in the US?

intro Relationships between branches and head officesInteresting question. We can only speak for Ogilvy, really. The short answer is, our New York head office treats us very well. We’ve had leaders in New York who have made sure the creative directors in North America know each other well, and share resources and information. Frankly we didn’t used to walk the walk, but for the past 6 years or so that’s all changed. It helped that our Toronto office has been doing work during those years that has been well liked by the powers that be. Mutual respect plays an important role. And of course, everyone wins when talented people work together. Are there times when we resent a U.S. campaign being essentially forced on us? Absolutely. On the other hand, our work has been picked up in the U.S. and other countries, and we’re often asked to work on international assignments. So it isn’t all hellish. Our ongoing mission is to help other offices understand our unique market’s conditions, and to do as much Canadian work as possible.
