When creative depts. need to hire…

When you need to hire in your creative department, do you put an ad in the paper? Do you just go through portfolios that have already been dropped off? Do you rely on referrals? Or do you use a creative recruitment agency?
Also, what is the best way to get a CD’s attention when phone calls and e-mails don’t seem to be working?

intro When creative depts. need to hire...Let’s start with your last question first. In earlier responses to similar questions, we’ve talked about how to get a CD’s attention. It’s hard. They’re days are already jam-packed so you need to be good to get them to take notice. A good stunt is welcome. Recently, someone who wanted to see us sent us a photograph each week for about six weeks. In each photo was a red box, presumably the person’s portfolio. Each week the red box got closer to Ogilvy. And finally it arrived, accompanied by its owner. Once we established that the person wasn’t a stalker we couldn’t wait to meet him/her and see what was in the box. Oh – and how about Alek who has been looking for a job and letting the whole world experience it with him on this site. This are brave and clever souls who just need to have portfolios as good as their stunts. (A great book is still your best chance.)

As for the rest of your questions, we never advertise in the newpaper. We spend a lot of time looking at portfolios. Referrals can be useful. At the very least, they get you in the door. We might use a recruiter if we’re looking for senior people, but not for juniors.
