Looking to start in a more “nurturing” agency

I have a question about the advertising agency atmosphere. I’m in school right now, about to start looking for my first position at an agency, and I’ve heard a lot of stories about all agencies being cut- throat etc. I’m not interested in the type of job where you give up your life for a paycheck. What kind of advice can you offer to someone who wants to be in advertising but is more interested in a smaller, more “nurturing” (for lack of a better word) environment? Thanks.

intro Looking to start in a more nurturing agencyWe’ve been at Ogilvy for so freakishly long in large part because of the positive environment. We’ve never been able to understand how people can get out of bed in the morning to go into a back-stabbing hell hole. Yes, there are quite a few. But certainly not all. Note that size has very little to do with it; some big agencies (like ours) are nurturing and positive, while some of the smaller ones are the worst offenders. Look at who is at the top and you get your answers on who to work for and who to avoid like, well, SARS. Ask professors and working creatives about reputations. All the clues are out there.
