I want to intern during college summer break

I’m a first year advertising student at Sheridan College. I’ve just completed my first year and I am awaiting my second year. I’ve fallen in love with the industry, because of the school’s program and also because of my co-op experience at the National Post. However, I do have some concerns and a question. I really don’t want to waste my summer working full-time at my part-time job. Ideally, I would like a job in the advertising field…doing anything almost anywhere…as long as I am in the industry I would be happy. But how could I go about finding an internship at an ad agency, a firm, or any advertising sales/creative department? I’ve visited other sites asking the same questions and have received alot of good advice, but no real leads. Please help a hungry student willing to do anything.

intro I want to intern during college summer breakGlad to hear you’re so excited about advertising, but don’t give up your day job just yet. As you no doubt know, internships aren’t all that easy to come by. More and more, agencies are offering unpaid creative dept. internships that last about 6 weeks and then new folks start. These are invaluable for developing the really strong portfolio that might get you a real job. Never mind, give you a real idea of what the business is like which school can’t do. How do you get consideration for one of these internships? A good portfolio and a creative director’s belief in your potential.

However, you don’t actually sound like you know which part of the business you’re interested in. Creative, acct management, , media? There are many different disciplines under one agency roof. Once you decide what you want to do it will be easier to advise you on how to go about it.

Have a good summer wherever you land.
