The art direction in my CW book is lacking


Hello Ladies. I am a junior copywriter of sorts — I am currently doing my internship. My question to you is about my portfolio. I am confident in my book and ideas that it presents and I am somewhat pleased with the Art Direction I have done for it too, however I am a writer and from a graphics view, its not that greatest of books from the art direction standpoint (considering that art directors are much better than me! hehe). Will that be any hindrance to me when presenting my book for actual jobs. Also, I do not have a tremendous amount of ads with heavy copy, is that a bad thing? Thanks.

intro The art direction in my CW book is lackingWe go pretty easy on the art direction in writer’s books. We look for the ideas and of course, the writing. It’s a big plus if you have a great art director friend to help you nail your pages, however. We’d suggest you either have tight, excellent comps, or rough comps not attempting to address design. You’re a writer, you’re allowed.

It’s ok to have a limited number of ads with long copy. We do expect to see enough to know you can write more than headlines, but don’t be tempted to put in long-copy ‘filler’–long-copy ads there for their own sake, not as strong as the others. Bad move. Keep working on the book if you don’t have great ads with words. Throw in some radio scripts while you’re at it.
