Which creative candidate is more qualified?

You are presented with 2 candidates. Who makes the best impression for you : The first one is fresh from a reknowned university, with some experience but a solid portfolio, the second one has no university degree but has acquired knowledge from a broad range of sources, and a few years in a small unknown agency.
What are the most important qualities for you in a candidate? A good portfolio, agency experience, a degree, good personality etc…
On another subject, Is marketing and business knowledge a must for creatives? How can an artistic director/ designer make the jump to a more management position? Thanks for your help!

intro Which creative candidate is more qualified?The book is everything. (Almost). We don’t care what your degree is or where it’s from, per se. In fact, some really interesting books have been created by people from other fields with no formal training. Paul Ruta, one of Canada’s best writers, worked for a type house before becoming a top writer at Roche.

Your attitude and personality does matter. We just hate it when we accidental hire an asshole. The one bad apple thing. CD’s are looking for people who are strongly motivated to do great work, have enthusiasm and small egos (or big egos well under control). We expect team players here.

Marketing and business knowledge via formal training are not a ‘must’. Again, big ideas in your book carry the day, when you’re new.
