Starting pay, Part II

In regards to you quick reply. I live in Toronto and interned in Toronto. Also, does it make a difference that this is a Direct Marketing Agency?
Signed, Poorboy

intro Starting pay, Part IIFor those not checking the archives, Poor Boy wants to know what an entry level salary is in Toronto. Yes, it does make a difference that we’re talking about a direct response agency. Our “direct” friends tell us you can start at a higher salary in that world. Maybe mid-30′s (compared to high 20′s or maybe 30 for an agency in Toronto). This would seem to be because fewer talented people are interested in this discipline, so the choices for direct agencies are fewer. It’s actually a great discipline to learn, even as you may very well want to end up later at an advertising agency. A couple of success stories leap to mind: several years ago we had Shane Hutton here at Ogilvy Toronto as an intern. The only way we could keep him past the internship was for him to work in our direct arm. He did very well there, and has moved on to become a huge star (he wrote many of the heavily awarded VW Beetle relaunch spots), now at Modernista! in Boston. Taxi’s Zak Mroeuh did some time doing direct response (read the interview with him on this site). Hope you get the job.
