Break on through to the other side

I am an art director with five years experience. Problem is, I am getting in touch with my writer side and I think I want to become a full fledged copywriter. How do I make the switch professionally. I have a partner who is obviously a copywriter. Do I have to leave the agency? Move to a new city? Seek help?

intro Break on through to the other sideMany art directors have made this switch. We highly reccomend you explore making the change. (Nancy always says she would be a copywriter, with do-overs.) Do get feedback from creatives you respect for an honest opinion of your copywriting strengths. With a ‘yes’ on that exercise, talk with your CD about this new goal. If you like your agency and are highly valued, a smart CD will see what they can do. Who knows. Meanwhile, know that writer-writer/ art director-art director partnerships aren’t unheard of, at least for a limited period of time. We’ve both done that and enjoyed it. In the end, we’re all idea people. The best partnerships have each partner contributing to the other’s discipline. Ultimately, if writing is more fulfilling for you, go for it—even if that means leaving “home.”
