#WAATBP – A South African Perspective
The funny thing about sharing my perspective on the ongoing conversation around “Where are all the black people in advertising?” is that I’ve had this debate with so many of my homies in the industry, and there’s always that comedian smart ass in the group who’ll answer, “The black people in advertising? You’re crazy if you think you’re gonna give a brother an Apple Mac and expect to see his ass again!”
Where Are All The Women?
I’m in the business of managing reputations for creative agencies. As such, I get contacted on a regular basis by awards show and event coordinators looking for creative directors to be jury members and talking heads. More and more people over the last few years are asking “have you got any women?” So much so that I’m starting to feel a little like I should be sticking a red light in my window.
Meet Me Half Way — Day 4: The Other Community
Yesterday, Chelsea and Mosca ventured deep into the jungle to meet the other community. A native community in the Amazon to be exact. They made friends in high places and danced until the sun came up. What an exciting journey they’re having so far. Good thing it’s not even halfway over.
Finding your way out of the jungle is hard. Especially when you’ve had a few too many with the locals.
Meet Me Half Way — Day 3: Fish Bait
La Comunidad’s two brave creatives have successfully made it past Day 3. And luckily, their most arduous task is somewhere behind them, swimming at the bottom of the Amazon River. That’s right, yesterday Cheslea and Mosca waltzed in the water with piranhas and lived to tell the tale. Foolish? Maybe. But brave nonetheless.
Meet Me Half Way — Day 2: Are We There Yet?
Yesterday was day two of Chelsea and Mosca’s brave journey into the jungle abyss. But they didn’t spend their night eating sweet ‘n sour bugs and sipping on fermented pineapple juice. Oh no. They were put right to work and had to search through thick brush and anacondas to find strange images in the night. Check out the video to find out who the winner is….
Meet Me Half Way — And They’re Off!
Chelsea and Mosca have just officially started La Comunidad’s 10-year anniversary celebration. This morning, they each departed from their offices, in Miami and Buenos Aires, and are now on their way to meet each other at the halfway point: the Tres Fronteras area, a place known for drug cartels and piranha infested waters, somewhere in the Amazon jungle.
A Good Idea Can Come From Anywhere. But Not Just Anyone Can Come up With a Good Idea.
As a creative, have you ever been asked, where do you get your ideas from? Here’s an answer you can cut and paste next to a picture of a cock and balls to create a handy anti-luddite flyer. It shall read: “First I consume loads of books from fiction to behavioural economics, then I watch loads of films from all over the world, I play video games sometimes, I also do the odd writing course, I take photographs a lot, I read a lot of magazines and blogs then I forget it all and sit down with a pen and paper and think about the problem at hand. Oh, I also surround myself with really smart people, work across loads of different clients and projects and give myself the time to make new connections and new mistakes.”
An Amazonian Anniversary Adventure
IHAVEANIDEA. La Comunidad. Two companies founded by big dreaming Latinos, both celebrating their tenth anniversary this season.
But only one of them is doing it in the middle of the jungle.
If you’ve been following IHAVEANIDEA over the last decade, you’ll know the affinity we have for the gang at La Comu. We’ve profiled their Miami office (the one with the swimming pool) we’ve interviewed the ever-dashing co-founder José Mollá, and even featured him in our very first self-published book. So when we learned that they were having a celebration of sorts to mark their first decade, we said “sure, we’ll be there! Where’s the party at? South Beach?”
Diary of a Copywriter: What Not to Wear
There’s a stereotype about people who work in advertising.
They dress in black, wear skinny jeans and Buddy Holly glasses and are covered in tattoos.
Well. There is one thing I always say about stereotypes. They are probably true.
Victorian Values
Google Chairman Eric Schmidt recently caused controversy in the UK when he criticized the British education system for dividing children too early into competing humanities and arts disciplines – or as he put in in typically eccentric British vernacular, “you’re either a ‘Luvvie’ or a ‘Boffin’.”
He argued that by inhibiting cross-pollination of ideas, insights and ways of thinking between the arts and sciences, the UK is failing its young people, and its competitiveness in the world.
