PRINCE X MICHAEL

Here’s a never ending topic of discussion: Prince or Michael? So what could possibly be better than having them both? For our first beach party in Cannes this year, we at Sizzer Amsterdam did exactly that. We took the Prince x Michael theme and went all out. If you missed it, sorry to hear that! Here’s a short flashback to the night in our five favorite Prince and Michael Jackson videos. Make way for the Purple, the Black and/or the White.

MICHAEL JACKSON

THRILLER

The holy grail of eighties MTV and the video your mom didn’t want you to see, but you copied to a VHS cassette and watched at your friend’s house anyway. Horror musical with herky jerky zombie dance and Vincent Price voice over to match. One of the all-time best, only matched by this Thai prison copy:

SAY SAY SAY

Paul and Linda McCartney selling wonder potion in the dirty South, giving Michael the strength to beat the bully of the village in a hand-to-hand battle. We find out it’s money in the bag for this dirty scheming bunch of hoodlums. Stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, anyone? Here’s that Peter Pan complex in full effect.

BEAT IT

Pre-Fight Club classic in which MJ finds out he is too late for the showdown, because he’s been messing around in his room in his fancy piano t-shirt and funky white socks. Also, we find out that ad-libbing

your own delays was still very much the thing to do in the eighties.

BILLIE JEAN

The sassy signature moves, the recurring baby tiger theme and the eco-friendly floor tiles. Haven’t we all tried dancing like this in our own backyards? And haven’t we all failed to impress the girl or guy next door by copying these moves?

SMOOTH CRIMINAL

At this point in his career, MJ only left Neverland in full disguise and only shopped after-hours. The full ten minute version of this ‘man walks into a bar’ scenario shows MJ doing his famous anti-gravity lean while singing about a CPR practice dummy. His nemesis is Mr.Big (played by Joe Pesci), who wants the entire population on earth to be addicted to drugs, starting with those poor homeless children. Bad man!

PRINCE

PURPLE RAIN

Recorded live at the First Avenue Night Club in Minneapolis during a benefit concert for the Minnesota Dance Theatre in the summer of 1983. Classic method acting by Prince at the beginning of the video, but when Wendy and Lisa strike the first chords it’s flashback time. Tissues out!

WHEN DOVES CRY

Dig if you will, the picture of Prince lying in a hot tub surrounded by purple roses. This is about the only original footage in this video. The rest of it is a roundup of the Purple Rain movie in about five minutes, which by the way is about all you need to see.

KISS

Rumors about who the woman under the black veil was in this video, have been roaming the Prince message boards (and offline predecessors) since its release. We can now reveal it was actually Prince himself in a narcissistic split screen shocker. Classic song, über classic video.

GET OFF

Diamonds & Pearls era gem and pre-Jehovah confession time.  Let’s be honest, what could be better than getting off with a banana yellow guitar and a girl in a short polka dot dress? If you were dreaming of 23 positions during a one night stand, Prince was still your man!

SIGN OF THE TIMES

Gang violence, AIDS, drug abuse, exploding rocket ships and an impending nuclear holocaust. No easy feat to pull off a video for this song, so Prince used the Times New Roman font to illustrate his point.

Quite a bold move!
