When I worked at my old agency we had the Budweiser account.

Or so we thought.

But about a year into our tenure it was announced that a certain Goodby Silverstein and Partners would be joining us on the account.

“Oh lovely!” was the thought that DID NOT cross my mind.

Because now, in addition to competing with my agency colleagues, I had to compete with the hottest agency in the country on what was one of the hottest accounts in the country.

This was spun to us at the agency as a win for Omnicom btw. Goodby were also an Omnicom agency you see. Something that meant absolutely nothing to me. Who the hell were Omnicom? Building my reel was all I cared about back then.

And sure enough, Goodby quickly created a campaign that was to become the bane of our lives. And I abandoned Budweiser in favor of Bud Light where we still had complete control.

This was my first experience of being the “wife” agency. Goodby were the sexy new “mistress” agency. And, to continue the analogy, Budweiser was the husband with the roving eye.

Looking back now, I completely understand Anheuser-Busch’s motivation for adding Goodby to the Bud roster.

When you hire an ad agency, big or small, you are essentially buying a point of view.

And quite often – whether you know it or not – it can be just one person’s point of view that you are buying. No matter how big the agency.

And if that person’s creative antenna is in any way faulty it could come back to bite you, and your brand, on the ass.

So it makes complete sense then, when the stakes are high, to seek more than one opinion. I know I would do the same thing if I was a brand manager. Why not?

We at the Escape Pod increasingly find ourselves in the mistress position. Something I take as a compliment.

We are the breath of fresh air. The energetic ones who will eat your lunch and drink your milkshake if you give us just half a chance.

Because we are hungry. We are still making our name.

Every morning we wake up alive with energy and passion about what we do.

We take everything personally. So we give everything our best shot.

Now if you and your agency do this too, you should be just fine. You probably have nothing to fear from The Escape Pod.

But if you don’t, and we show up, you might want to think about contacting a divorce lawyer.
