How’d You Get In: Karl Fleet thumbnail

This weeks edition of HOW’D YOU GET IN takes us all the way over to New Zealand where we meet up with Karl Fleet – Deputy Creative Director at ColensoBBDO. His career highlights include a Gold at the One Show, two Gold Cannes Lions, a D&AD Silver nomination, over a hundred local and international awards, but also getting a free A3 pad of paper and markers from Saatchi & Saatchi – to redo his book.

How’d I get in? That’s a good question. Looking back I didn’t take the hints that maybe I should try another occupation.

When I decided that a life in Advertising was for me, there weren’t that many creative places to learn. I was doing a Bachelor of Business in Advertising but did everything but learn how to create award winning ads.

I remember showing my first book to a senior team at Saatchi and Saatchi Auckland. After looking at my book, the art director quietly excused himself from the room and return with an A3 pad and some markers. He gave them to me and suggested that I may want to start again. I was stoked, a free A3 pad and flash looking markers from Saatchi and Saatchi!!! Using these item I started a new book and repeat ably visited the team at Saatchi’s until my book was in shape to show CD’s around town.

No bites. New Zealand at the time didn’t do placements for young teams that is common in the states and U.K.

At that time a new type of Advertising School opened in New Zealand supported by the Industry. It was called ‘The Axis Ideas School’. You had a 2 week run of classes taken by the best in the industry, at the time, and then a 2 month placement at an top agency.

I was luckily enough to get a placement at MOJO partners under the newly appointed CD Mike O’Sullivan.  Mike has since gone on to be one of the highest Awarded CD’s in Australasia. The man is that good. He helped turn the first ad I worked on at Mojo into a Gold Axis at our local award show. It was a great grounding that helped me get a full time job at Y&R where with my partner at the time, Guy Denniston, we won the New Zealand young creative competition to compete at Cannes. It still feels like it was just yesterday.
