When we asked ad agency legend turned VCU Adcenter legend Rick Boyko to tell us what kinds of books would we find on his bookshelf, his coffee table, the back of his toilet tank, wherever, we didn’t know he’d respond so literally. May we present to you: “what Rick Boyko reads when he’s on the can (and elsewhere)”

The Fountainead
by Ayn Rand
A terrific study of the creative process and the difficulties found while trying to keep from compromising an ideal in the pursuit of success.

The World is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century
by Thomas Friedman
A sobering look at globalization and economics in a digital world. While a proven journalist, Friedman demonstrates he’s also a good author. A must read by students entering the work force today.

For Whom the Bell Tolls
by Ernest Hemingway
A classic study of Love and War, by arguably one of the world’s best writers.

The Grapes of Wrath
by John Steinbeck
A touching tale of a families struggle to cope during the Depression. Steinbeck is one of my favorite writers and along with Of Mice and Men and Travels with Charlie give a different background to anyone wanting to view America apart from the glare of todays headlines.

To Kill a Mockingbird
by Harper Lee
A fantastic story that won Miss Lee a Pulitzer Prize and spawned an Academy Award winning movie. Without a doubt one of my favorite books, because I remember growing up in a small town (although in California) that felt much like the one in this book.

Undaunted Courage
by Stephen Ambrose
Relying heavily on the journals of Lewis and Clark, Ambrose has put together an entertaining fast paced narrative that reads like an adventure novel. It has it all, politics, exploration, infighting, and sex, just like in advertising.

Paul Rand
by Steven Heller
One of the best books on one of the past centuries best designers, who I had the good fortune to have worked with and got to know.

Frank Gehry, Architect
by J. Fiona Ragheb
This beautiful book exhibits some of the best work done by this influential architect over his career. Ranges from award winning structures like the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao to furniture, in pictures and sketches.

Good Poems
Edited by Garrison Keillor
A terrific compilation, divided by subject, of some 300 very enjoyable poems. The only better way to experience it is to hear him read them on his NPR/PBS “A Writers Almanac” radio show.

Where the Sidewalk Ends
by Shel Silverstein
I read this book to all three of my daughters as they were growing up and they all agree it was their favorite. Entertaining and insightful.
