Red Dragon
by Thomas Harris
The best piece of dramatic writing I’ve ever read. With just a five-word sentence, he sent me spinning out of my chair. Taught me that the most sparse writing carries the most impact.

To Kill a Mockingbird
by Harper Lee
A masterpiece that was made into my favourite movie of all time. Wouldn’t change a word or a frame.

Fifth Business
by Robertson Davies
I have read this book several times, and I am always completely taken by how sweeping the story is. Why is this not been made into a movie yet?

The Great Movies
by Roger Ebert
Most people know Roger as a TV personality that talks about movies. But his is, above all, an incredible writer. Read this, and you will want to see every movie he writes about. Or see every movie you have seen all over again.

George, Be Careful
by George Lois
I love advertising books. And have them all. This is one of my favourites.

The Best of James Herriot
by James Herriot
One of my favourite writers, who didn’t start writing until he was well into his 50s. Incredible storytelling, touching, emotional, hilarious at times, he had such an eye for detail and dialect. Also captures an era that I would have loved to live in.

Adventures in the Screen Trade
by William Goldman
So insightful, so honest, and so applicable to our business.

Letters From a Nut
by Ted L. Nancy
Quite simply, the funniest book I have, or ever will, read.

Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley
by Peter Guralnick

Careless Love (The Unmaking of Elvis Presley)
by Peter Guralnick
The best biographies I have ever read. I had a passing interest in Presley, appreciated his place in rock history, but this two-volume series actually succeeded in making me an Elvis fan. Not just the story, but the writing.
