Typically when faced with the city’s top Creative Directors, it’s normal to say a prayer or two. That’s why it was only fitting for Toronto’s Portfolio Night to take place in a converted church. Last Thursday, 120 young creative hopefuls entered Revival with portfolios in hand — some hoping for a job, others hoping for a miracle.

Keeping with tradition, ihaveanidea packed a bar with advertising professionals and advertising hopefuls for its career-focused, speed-dating-type event. With drinks in hand, over 40 of Toronto’s most regarded Creative Directors pored over the portfolios of advertising students and recent graduates from all over Southern Ontario.

The event went off without a hitch. Advice was given, critiques offered, business cards exchanged and even a few tears shed. Creative Directors commented on the breadth of talent in the room. Some books were ready for hire and others needed some work. But that’s what the event is all about: Getting in front of the people who matter and receiving honest (and sometime hard-to-hear) advice. Only time will tell, however, whether or not that advice fell on deaf ears.

As the crowd at Revival roared into overtime and the band Shortwave took to the stage, some people headed for the hills while others headed for the bar. Typically overtime finds especially eager young creatives offering their elevator pitch to the Creative Directors gracious enough to stick around after the close of the third period. The bar staff just about had to kick out David Rosenberg, Andy Shortt and Rob Tarry who stuck around long after they needed to. It should be mentioned that the latter of the three came to the event straight from a photo shoot and had to fly back to Vancouver first thing the next morning.

If nothing else, those in attendance should be pleased with the fact that they were part of making advertising history. This event was the largest simultaneous portfolio review ever held in the world. ihaveanidea hosted events in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal, Halifax, San Francisco, Boston, Chicago and New York. This was Portfolio Night’s forth year in Canada, and first year south of the border.

A special thanks goes out to the Creative Directors who attended, and to our sponsors. These are the people who truly believe in our impossibility. Without them Portfolio Night would remain a dream.

See you all next year.
