A dimly lit, Irish pub, in the heart of downtown San Francisco was where some of the cities finest advertising minds gathered for this year’s ihaveanidea Portfolio Night IV.

As a double agent, I was both representing ihaveanidea from a PR standpoint and also First Light, a lead gold sponsor of the event, as their Director, Brand Communications. I was mingling with the likes of Mike Shine, Jon Butler and Tom Coates from Butler Shine Stern & Partners, Chuck McBride from TBWA , Linda Harless, Will McGinness and Steve Mapp from Goodby Silverstein & Partners, Jon Soto and Dominic Goldman from Publicis/Hal Riney, Mike Harris from McCann, Mike Andrews from DDB and Jarl Olsen to name a few. All were on hand to dispense invaluable morsels of advertising wisdom to a lucky few in the city by the Bay.

The event was sold out and 45 juniors nervously clutching their portfolios waited anxiously in the underground ‘holding bar’ at Kells Irish Pub on Jackson Street. Mike Shine from Butler, Shine, Stern & Partners, the host agency, kicked off the night with a few kind words thanking everyone for coming out and encouraging them to take the CD’s comments with a ‘grain of salt’ and more importantly to ‘have a good time!’. The crowd cheered, everyone was pumped. The juniors all eager and timid at the same time approached their first stations and the first period began. The CD’s turned into reviewing machines, insisting that they keep going with no breaks just as long as their beer mugs were full and a few popcorn shrimp and onion rings were within arms reach. As the night wore on some courageous juniors, even tried to sneak up to the main floor just to get a glimpse or rub an elbow with one of their advertising idols, only to be sent back downstairs. At the end of the night, everyone was wearing a look of satisfaction, Creative Directors and juniors alike, signalling that a good and productive time was had by all.
