Calgary is not considered a creative advertising mecca, even in Calgary let alone the world. And if I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times, geography should not be limiting factor. If it can happen in Austin, Vancouver, Portland and even Minneapolis of all places, it can happen here.

But passion starts young and that’s why we at Push wanted to get involved with ihaveanidea’s Portfolio Night in Canada. (That and the fact that I’m tired of people coming in with poems about their grandmother, or pictures of their goldfish, convinced that this is the kind of thing they need to show to get a job “doing advertising”.)

I thought this would be a excellent opportunity to reach a wide student audience with a primer on what CDs are looking for in a book.

Turns out I was wrong, we only had three students show up on the night! But on a positive note they taught US something much more valuable:

The reason why there are only three students in this market interested in our industry is a simple one. No-one suggests it as an option until the third year of a three-year design course. By which time it usually frightens them a tad – since they have two years of conditioning that they are going to be designers/photographers/whatever. And they are unwilling to “switch horses” midway through the race.

We need to start teaching advertising modules in these courses by at least the second year – preferably the first – so that it is positioned as a credible route for them – not a dangerous alternative.

This should help immeasurably with future years.

That said, everyone had a great time on the night and the students got to do more networking in one evening than they probably will in the rest of their careers.
